Create a Unique Pallet Bed

Recycle, reuse, reduce. These have become three words circling many vocabularies now. With the idea of “Going Green” increasing in popularity, the pallet bed is also growing in popularity. Easy to make, and the ultimate way to recycle.

Some tips to making your very own pallet bed:

1 – Use pallets that are clean and in good shape. Unless you know how to repair damaged or dirty pallets, it would be a good idea to use pallets in already good shape.
2 – Clean pallets thoroughly before use. Check for bugs and mold. Bleach, vinegar, and a variety of other items help kill mold and bugs.
3 – Be sure to keep pallets outdoors until they are safe and ready to be used.
4 – If you have decided to paint your pallets, always paint in a well ventilated area.

Yuck! Palmettos!

If you live in Florida, then chances are you have come across the dreaded palmetto bug. What do you do when this over-sized cockroach crosses your threshold? If screaming and jumping onto a chair is your first option, it may be time to rethink how you react in this situation.

To rid yourself of palmettos there’s a few things you should do:
1 – Keep your home clean at all times, especially your kitchen and bathroom areas. Keep food up and out of the way, and wipe your counters down on a daily basis.
2 – Make sure gaps and cracks are filled, preventing bugs from entering your home. Close up all drains as well.
3 – Mop up excess water. Keep your home dry, and water free. Any areas that are prone to moisture be sure to clean.
4 – Infest in a pesticide, such as Raid, and keep this on hand. There are many pesticides which prevent palmettos from returning for up to 6 months.
5 – And finally, if all else fails, use a local exterminator.

Creat a home gym.

Was one of your New Years resolutions this year to get in shape, lose weight, or start going to a gym? How are your resolutions coming? If your resolutions have fallen to the way side because you haven’t had time, don’t have the money, or just do not like gyms then perhaps creating an in home gym is the way to go for you.

A home gym may seem like a big stretch on the wallet, but can actually be pretty affordable. The first thing you’ll want to make sure you have for your home gym is a padded floor. Carpet is not ideal, but if your room is carpeted then step one is complete. If your space is hardwood or tile you may want to invest in the locking foam gym flooring. Typically these are sold in sets of 4 or 8, at around $25 – $50 depending on the quality you are looking for. These are easy to “install” and just require a simple locking in place for full coverage. Now you have ample padding to the floor.

The next important item for your home gym is exercise equipment. This does not mean you need to spend hundreds or thousands on expensive equipment. A set of weights, an exercise ball, resistance bands, and yoga blocks are all easy and relatively inexpensive options for your home gym, and provide a full body workout. Pilates and yoga are great options to do at home. Since your floor will be padded, you will not need to purchase a yoga mat.

Now the hard part is over. Just be sure to set aside an hour, or even 30 minutes a day and enjoy the privacy of your home gym.

For those wishing to develop a more advanced home gym, or wish to install exercise equipment into the space, fans, or proper ventilation – contact Gary today!

Easy Ways to Update Your Home.

With Spring comes the desire to clean and update your home. But many of us do not have the finances available to redo expensive features such as cabinets, floors, and bathtubs. There are many cheaper alternatives to updating your home, without breaking the bank.

A quick fix that changes the appearance of one’s kitchen is cabinets. But cabinets can cost hundreds to thousands of dollars to replace. Instead of spending a large amount of money and replacing all cabinets, invest in paint and new knobs, saving you a ton of money. Remove all cabinet doors from the cabinets, and be sure to outline walls with painters tape to keep your walls clean.

Be sure to sand, prime, and seal all cabinets for painting. Once your cabinets and doors are dry you can fasten them back together, and replace the knob.

Another fix that brings new life to a home is changing floors, but that’s an even more expensive project! A quick and easy way to bring new life to a floor is throw rugs. A throw rug will cost you anywhere from $75 – $300 for a good, large one. Replacing your floor will run you $500+!!

Lastly, for dingy bathrooms, replacing the tub and tile is a good way to update it, but again we’re talking a lot of money. We’ve mentioned how to renew your tub without spending a lot in a previous blog entry here, but how can you renew dingy tiles? Just as easy as renewing cabinets, paint! Many local hardware stores sell paint for grout that will quickly bring new life to dingy dirty grout. Tile can also be painted. Be sure to thoroughly clean tile and grouts, and user primer before painting.

Time to bug proof your home!

The mosquitoes are coming out in full swing now with the warmer weather. It’s that time of the year where you need to check, and double check that all windows and doors are fully sealed, and that no water is left sitting around. Mosquitoes love being in your home, so it’s important to keep your family in the clear of these pesky insects.

First – all windows and doors should be properly sealed, ensuring there are no gaps or cracks which mosquitoes can sneak in through. If there are any openings, be sure to seal them as soon as possible.

Second- if mosquitoes thrive in your backyard, it may be a good idea to get your lawn sprayed to keep bugs at bay. If you do decide to spray your lawn, be sure no pets or children will be in the yard for a minimum of 24 hours.

And lastly – make sure that no water is left sitting around. Standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, and also calls attention to other bugs.

Update your kitchen.

Looking to update the 1970′s tile in your kitchen? What about switching out the cabinets falling from the ceiling? Many do not realize how much work truly goes into remodelling a kitchen, and begin the task thinking it will be easy. Before you start tearing down the cabinets yourself to install new ones, remember a few things before.

First, if cabinets are not taken down with care, you could end up damaging the wall behind, adding even more to the final cost. Walls that tiles or cabinets are being installed on should be smooth, and even in order to give off the best appearance for the final product.

Tiles being placed on the floor require a lot of care in the placement. Tiles that are not level will cause uneven walking space, and could cause more trouble than it’s worth when you can’t figure out why your table is wobbly.

To avoid these issues and others, call Gary today! Gary turns out great professional quality with all his work. He is not only affordable, but reliable!
